RE: FW: At-500

Ah, you speak! And, I agree with you mostly. I’m not really a new ham in the
sense that I’ve been a SWL listening to hams for 40 years. That gives me
some insight into their minds, and I’ve felt for several years that hams pay
way too much for what they get. An auto-tuner is nothing in terms of
complexity compared to even a cell-phone. Yeah, other factors come into
play, but not enough to justify the prices!

I don’t see a LDG tuner that fits my needs and budget, but I do see the
DTS-4 antenna switch. Push-buttons are a Good Thing, remotes are even
better! More importantly, the DTS-4 would greatly simplify what I’d need a
tuner to do to the point where a manual one would suffice. The AT-500 came
up because I’m determined to stay away from things like band switches that
only California’s governor could turn! Radio has such a barbaric past. πŸ™‚
But, I can twirl knobs with the best!

I think I’ll order the DTS-4 and remote from HRO.

You are paying for the "Icom" label. Just get any smart tuner , it will work
JUST the same . This one does it all PLUS more… Once it is the automatic
mode , you forget it is there.

Plus the answer is CLEAR , if the one you are being offered has a problem ,
STAY AWAY from it.

If you must have an Icom AT-500 , wait , I will get you one a lot less , I
sold one a few months ago that was cherry for $200

I suppose I didn’t communicate my thoughts clearly. Why should an individual
expect to get the same price as a dealer who offers a 90-day guarantee? No,
that just doesn’t compute. Of course, since you’re a part-time dealer, you
have to favor higher prices because you’re fond of eating too.

Just remember, I still have to also pay for an amp so I’m under pressure to
not spend a cent I don’t have to. I’m not wed to getting an AT-500. I’m not
going to send anyone any money until Bill answers my question. Namely, will
an AT-500 properly switch between antennas even though I only have two?
That’s sorta critical to my preference for the AT-500, and the manual is as
inscrutable as its Japanese authors! πŸ™‚

Well, the lets figure somethin else out, cause I m pretty sure thats what it
will take to get just becasue it has the feature you are after and many more
to boot…….Some old amps are bringin more than they listed for new as
well but the inflation thing more than anything else…Ill put my thinking
cap on and will go to the big boys, see what they might have for a more
simple solution. Gonna have to go another way I think… CUL Murray
